Yesterday I was asked if i could display the entrys of the hosts and lmhosts file in the %windir%\System32\drivers\etc folder. A small Agent Task, with a powershell script was required which took around 10-15 minutes to create and test.

It would take someone around 2-3 minutes to log on to a server, and check the files (It can be done faster, but with logon times ect – 2-3 minutes is a good avg. guess).

Now directly from the SCOM console, this task can be performed in under 1 minute depending on the console speed.

displayhostfile
The output is showing Computer name, ipv4, ipv6, hostname and notes

Now, you can even select multiple servers and get the results faster. I know that you could script your way out of this, but if you want everything in your console, and you’re in a multi domain/DMZ environment – This solution/MP would help you out alot.
